Hidden Safari

Displaying 20140228_100349.jpg  In this project we made a jungle animal that we drew in blue, and then we hid it behind shapes drawn in red and orange.  As you can see from picture, the picture all of the squares and triangles.  Behind all of that there is a tiger.  I really liked this lesson because it boosted my overall confidence of how well i can draw.  I think this was a very good lesson and would have to find a way to use it in my classroom
In my class i would tie this hidden safari into a lesson over the continents, for each different continent they would draw a different animal from each area, and hide it in the pictures like i have here.  I would make this encompassing lesson, that you could use this entire year, as you cover each lesson.  I will use this lesson in my classroom, if i teach at roughly a middle school level because i think at that age they could handle the complexity of drawing behind things.

Week 6 of Peer Teaching

Week 6 of Peer Teaching

Displaying 20140502_093902.jpg  In the final peer teaching lesson of the semester we made a earth out of shaving cream and paint.  While this without a doubt was the easiest lesson of the semester it was also one of the funnest.  It allowed the class to cut loose and have a good time after a very stressful semester.  To make this we spread shaving cream out like cake frosting then we poured paint over it and mixed the paint with our fingers.  After the paint was mixed to our liking we put our circle on the cream and pressed down.  We then peeled off the circles and then laid them down like this.  This is one of the best lessons of the semester.
I would use this lesson in a kindergarten class, it would be a fun way for the kids to learn about earth day.  First i would have the kindergarteners learn about earth day and why it is so important.  Next i would explain, how to make the earths then we would make them.  Also i would have the students make a ocean using colors like blue, and green and purple.  Then i would take pictures of these art works because they dont really hang up or hold together well.  Then finally we would go outside and plant a tree.

Week 5 of Peer Teaching

Week 5 of Peer Teaching

Displaying 20140502_104142.jpg Throughout the course of this lesson we made a pop up book with partners around them.  At the start of this lesson the teachers asked us to come up with a few different things, like an animal a place and an activity.  After that we combined our ideas and made up our stories.  In my stories with my partners we had a story about Lucy, and her pets Wally the Walrus, and Samuel the Elephant.  The story itself is dandy about jealousy and forgiveness.  The lesson and project itself was rather easy, it did take some time to make the book though, and that was really the only issue with the lesson.
I could use this activity in my classroom and gear it towards younger grades.  In my class i would have each student make their own individual book.  I would also gear the lesson toward the if you give a mouse a cookie books, similar to what we did in class.  I would then have my class build these over the course of an entire lesson, reading a lot of the books in the series.  I would use this class in like a 2nd grade class, and would tie it into the language arts and reading.

Displaying 20140425_110618.jpg  In this lesson we made clay frogs, while there were tons of steps and directions, it was rather easy to follow.  After constructing the frogs we painted the frogs a wide variety.  First we learned about scoring and wetting the clay to make it smooth.  We used these techniques to make the frogs nice and smooth, and we used the scoring sticks to make the eyes of frog.  This was a great lesson it was really fun and it was also really hands on, it left me with the feeling of accomplishment as i could show everybody what I had built.
I would use this lesson as part of a science lesson, i would use this lesson between the grades of 5th and 8th grade.  In this lesson we would cover animals that live in a swamp or a wetland area.  After taking the test over the lesson i would build the frogs with the class as sort of a fun activity for the students to cut loose on.  I would also have the students build another animal such as a snake or a fish so they would have plenty of opportunity to work with the clay.  This was a very fun lesson and it will allow the students to work with there hands.

Week 4 of Peer Teaching

Week 4 of Peer Teaching

Displaying 20140505_133941.jpg  In this weeks project we made a dream catcher after learning the history of a dream catcher we strung them up added the beads and feathers, then tied then up and hung them.  After hanging them we learned of a story that went along with the dream catcher. This was one of the more difficult projects of the semester as the way that you tie on beads was somewhat confusing.  While this project was rather difficult it was one of the most fulfilling projects of the semester.
I would definitely use this project in my own classroom.  I would use this during a lesson about the history for the native Americans.  The dream catcher was a huge part of their history and culture and i would hammer that point home to the class. Really this project could be used in any class starting at about the 4th grade level.  Not because the project itself is to difficult but because some of the knots that are needed to tie the beads on are somewhat difficult.  This is a project that i will use in my classroom someday, it has to be its a very big part of the native American culture and that culture is a large part of our states history.

Displaying IMG_2950.jpg During this lesson we learned about Aztec sundials.  In the beginning of this lesson we learned the history of the Aztecs and then we started on the sundial.  We first used a few different forms of media.  The first being a sharpie, the second being crayons, the crayons that I had for some reason were not working, so i had to use my elbow partners crayons to get the bright colors that i wanted.  In my design i drew the sun with sunglasses.  I drew the sun because it is bright and vibrant.  I drew the sunglasses because they are cool and who doesn't like a cool warm sun.
I would use this project in my school during the history of the Aztecs,  I personally remember learning about the Aztecs in the 6th grade, i would add this sundial to suppliment that learning that happened that year.  I feel like when students can make something that is memorable like a sundial they remember things better.  That is why i would have my classroom build this sundial.  I would tie the sundial into an entire lesson, over the ancient civilizations of central america, and for this part of it the students will make sundials.

Week 3 of Peer Teaching

Week 3 of Peer Teaching

Displaying 20140502_011328.jpg During this project we covered a lesson on scratch board art.  This lesson was very interesting for the simple fact we first colored a piece of card stock with colored pencils.  Using this style we used all different kinds of colors and were instructed to make it as bright and as colorful as possible.  We then painted that card stock black completely.  Then after allowing the card stock to dry, we took a skewer and chiselled out a design that we had thought of previously.  As you can see the bright colors pop through  the black and really make the whole process very fun and cool.
I would love to use the process in my class, the only real issue that i have with this lesson is that i do not know how i would use it.  A couple of ideas that i think that you could use it in would be in a homeroom style of a middle school class.  This would allow students to get creative with the art and you could stretch it out over the course of the semester.  If you used it throughout this class you could give students the proper amount of time they would need to fully understand the history of scratch board art.  I thought this was a bright and interesting project. It was certainly fun, my only question on this project of when we could use this project.

Displaying 20140411_105310.jpg In this lesson we learned about the ancient art of origami.  During the course of this lesson we learned about the history of origami and  the rules behind origami.  After first learning of the history of origami we learned about rules while the rules are pretty simple they are very important.  The most important rule of origami is not to skip steps.  After learning the basics we learned first how to make a fish, than a frog, and a puppy.  Then we were asked to make our own animal and write a story.  This was most definitely the funnest lesson of the semester.
I would most definitely use this lesson in my classroom.  This lesson could easily be used when covering the history of a country like Japan.  You could do this lesson in history portion of a 5th grade class.  The only thing that i would do differently would be to not write a story about random animals, i would have the animals that they made tell a story about a tall tale of the Japanese culture.  Other then that i thought the lesson was a smashing success, and would without a doubt use this lesson in my own classroom.

Week 2 of Peer Teaching

Week 2 of Peer Teaching.

Displaying 20140502_011504.jpg This was the Faberge egg project that we did in class.  In this project we essentially made a stamp on a piece of foam like card stock sketched in our design with a wooden dowel and then we painted the foam.  Basically it was like a giant egg stamp and we stamped them onto the paper.  This was an interesting process because while it seem very complicated at first after starting i saw that it was rather simple.
I would use this project in class in a middle school when covering the history of a country like Russia.  You could do this project in a middle school social studies class.  First I would have the class go over and cover the history of Faberge eggs, next i would show pictures of real Faberge eggs.  Then like we did in class i would have the students design and make their own Faberge eggs.  I would use the same exact process that we used in class.  This was a very interesting lesson, if i ever do teach a middle school social studies class, i would most definitely do a lesson with this kind of art work in it.

Displaying 20140502_011429.jpg In this project we made a art collage of pictures from magazines that described ourselfs.  At the beginning of the lesson we traced the profile of our head with a partner.  Then we went through multiple magazines, and found pictures described ourselfs or things that we liked.  After cutting them out we than glued the pictures inside the profile of our head.  After doing that we had to write 4 words that described ourselfs.  This project was one of the more crafty ones that we did in class this semester.
I would use this my classroom in like a 5th grade class.  I think this project would work best at 5th grade because kids are starting to come into there own at this age and it would and could give students that dont have a lot of confidence more of it.  Also it allows for the teacher to truly get a feel of what your students are into.  In my classroom i think i would do one at the beginning of the year and than another at the end just to show my students how much or how little things change from the start to the end.  When i get my own classroom i will most certainly use this to show my students how much things change.

Week 1 of Peer Teaching

Week 1 of Peer Teaching

Displaying 20140502_011042.jpg  The picture shown here is a flower that we made in class,  the making of this flower occurred using a few different mediums.  The first is crayons they were used in the stem of the flower.  The second were colored pencils, they were used in the center of the flower.  The 3rd and final medium used is chalk.  The chalk was used in the petals of the flowers.  If you look closely you can see the petals of the flower blending together with shades of yellow orange and red.
I would use this activity in my classroom.  While the art itself is pretty simple it could easily be used, in a flower unit in school.  I also liked the fact that we used 3 different mediums, that could easily be used to show and separate the 3 major different parts of the flower.  I would use this activity in a 2nd or 3rd grade classroom, because at that age they would be old enough to understand the different mediums and the different parts of a flower.

Displaying 20140502_011142.jpg The picture shown here is of the Turtles that we drew in class.  What i liked about this project is the fact that we used a lot of different mediums and it allowed us  the class to basically design our own turtle and use whatever colors I wanted to use.  In this turtle crayons of different kinds were used, for example i remember using oil pastels and regular crayons.  The water around the turtle is water color paint.  Water was placed all over the paper, when placed on certain crayons it blended some together and on other areas it did nothing at all.  This was one of the more entertaining projects of the semester.
I would use this project in my classroom, probably if I were teaching a middle school class were we were covering the ocean.  Although this project in class was based for a younger group of kids i would stretch it out into the older ages of kids for the simple fact, that i would want this project to be more of an overview of ocean life.  In my class I would have students draw 5 different kinds of ocean life and then they would have to give a brief biography on each different animal.
